Every year Mazda continues to innovate its models and improve its existing features and design to serve you better. But Mazda is planning to add a new model into their lineup next year in the form of the 2023 Mazda CX-50 SUV. You might be wondering, what is the Mazda CX-50 and what makes it so great?

The CX-50 is a more rugged and slightly larger version of the CX-5 and CX-30 crossovers. This new SUV emphasizes off-road driving and adapting to every terrain, which is why they’ve added a host of new technologies and a powerful engine. Mazda hasn’t yet released the pricing or trims available; however, it’s expected to follow their traditional trim structure of four trims: Sport Touring, Grand Touring, and Signature. Furthermore, it’s expected the MSRP will start at $29,000 and may rise to $40,000 for their premium trim.

Performance

All models of the CX-50 will include a 2.5-liter four-cylinder standard engine that produces 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. However, users can select the more powerful turbocharged powertrain that provides 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Either engine uses a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. This means that power is directed to all four wheels, which helps to provide better traction to help with off-road capability or driving in bad weather conditions. More power in all wheels helps to achieve faster acceleration times.

In addition, the CX-50 is equipped with Mazda intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) technology where users can choose the different drive modes such as sport driving and off-road.

Exterior and Interior

The entire CX-50 was designed for nature enthusiasts to fuel their passion for exploration. It is designed with a low roofline, wide stance, and spacious cabin to store outdoor equipment. One unique aspect of the CX-50 is its strong and versatile roof rails. These rails are made to carry outdoor equipment such as tents, storage units, kayaks, and inflatable boats. The liftgate opening and elongated cargo floor allow users to stow all outdoor gear easily.

Like the CX-30 and CX-5 crossovers, the CX-50 will have two rows of seats to fit up to five passengers. The large square dashboard provides a more rugged and truckish look compared to other Mazda crossovers. However, it’ll feature the same 8.8-inch infotainment display allowing you to navigate seamlessly or enjoy entertainment options.

Safety

Although the CX-50 hasn’t released information on the safety features included, it’s likely the CX-50 will incorporate Mazda’s signature i-Activsense technologies. This safety suite includes:

  • Adaptive front-lighting system
  • High beam control
  • Mazda radar cruise control
  • Rear vehicle monitoring system
  • Lane departure warning system
  • Forward obstruction warning
  • Smart city brake support
